Obituary for Mernie Short

Mernie Short
SHORT, Mernie
Suddenly at home, Mernie Lyall Short (June 18, 1944-December 2, 2020) of Finch, beloved husband of Beth (Angus) Short for 53 years. Predeceased by his parents, the late Velma (Stewart) and late Burnis Short. Brother of Delburn Short (late Melanie Daye) of Cornwall. Uncle of Kara (Chris) Filion, Chris Short (Anita) of Winchester, William Vrieswyk (Kelly) of Oshawa. Great uncle of Cameron, Grant, Kalynn, Brendan and Andre. Brother-in-law of Wilma (Roy) Graham of Sudbury. Greatly missed by his fur-ball buddy, Mykee. Mernie will be remembered by many as the 'Massey-Ferguson Man'. He loved being a mechanic and in the day, often worked in the field until midnight to get a bailer to tie or put a tractor out of gear when a farmer was spending the night planting corn. Mernie had an early start, having at the age of 6 taken a lock apart and putting it back together again correctly. When no longer running the business in Chesterville he enlarged his workshop at home and continued to tinker with older model equipment. He was an inventor before his time. For years, he talked about infloor heating, using a boiler. He had may ideas for building a boiler, but it wasn't until the Pembroke Plowing Match that he met a local genius from Killaloe, who had set up a computerized shop to manufacture them. The new boiler came home on the back of the half-ton, nearly rocking off when a front tire blew near Arnprior. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Mernie's life is planned for June, 2021. Donations to the Winchester District Memorial Hospital, Pulmonary Unit or St. Luke's-Knox Presbyterian Church, Finch would be appreciated.
