Evert was a man who lived life to the fullest, not waiting for life to come to him, but actively searching out and enjoying new adventures. In 1952, he married his lifetime partner, affectionately known as Dini, and together they began the biggest adventure of all, immigrating to Canada from Holland, not knowing if they would ever see their extended family again. In 1955 they bought Duart MacLean’s dairy farm in Goldfield, where they would raise a family of seven children. Growing up on the farm was a great life for all of us, seeing the cycles of nature, crops and farm animals renew themselves each spring, and sharing in the farm work. He later used the farm as a base to turn his love of bees from a hobby into a full-time beekeeping operation, which resulted in three of his sons, and two grandsons also becoming beekeepers.
He had many hobbies, including photography, ham radio, sailing and in his later years maintaining his contacts with his family and many friends via the internet. He and Dini were long time members of the Stormont Yacht Club, where they sailed every summer. That love of sailing eventually resulted in them purchasing a sailboat in the Bahamas, where they spent the winters for many years, sailing, fishing, diving, hosting friends and family for visits, and enjoying long-term friendships with local Bahamians. Each summer they made a trek to Alberta to visit their families there, and camp and hike in the much loved Rocky Mountains.
To follow Evert’s wishes, cremation has taken place. As expressions of sympathy memorial donations to Hospice Cornwall (cornwallhospice.com) or Winchester District Memorial Hospital (www.wdmhfoundation.ca) would be appreciated by the family.
