Obituary for Nancy Hickey (Grant)

Nancy Hickey (Grant)
Hickey, Nancy Mildred (Nee Grant) – 1929-2018

Passed away peacefully, in her sleep, with her daughter by her side after a decade long struggle with Dementia, on Thursday, April 26 at Arbour Heights in Kingston, Ontario. Nancy, in her 90th year, will finally be welcomed home by her beloved husband of 60 years, George. She is survived by her loving children, Sharon McAllister (Bill) and Don Hickey (Violet) and her loving sister, Donelda (Donnie) Smith. Nancy will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren, Laura Morrison (Nathanael), Andrew McAllister (Denise), Kristen Hickey and Hayden Hickey. She is survived by her great-grandchildren, Hannah and Caleb Morrison and Avery McAllister. Nancy was predeceased by her parents Donald and Lena (Russell) Grant as well as brothers, Millard, George, Russell, John and Earl Grant and sisters, Beulah(Peg) Grant, Theresa Cameron and Gail Shaver.

Nancy was born and raised on the Street Road in Glengary and in spite of her progressing dementia, never forgot her roots and her wonderful life on the farm. She graduated from Cornwall Collegiate where she proceeded to work in the Bank of Nova Scotia, a job she loved. After marrying George in 1952, Nancy lived in the town of Aultsville, where George taught high school. In 1957, due to the demise of Aultsville and other Lost Villages, Nancy drove behind their house, down the highway as it made its way to the brand new town of Ingleside where she resided with George and her children, Sharon and Donald (Don) for the majority of her married life until moving to Kingston in 2009. Nancy was blessed with a wonderful life that touched many lives. She was full of love, compassion and kindness for her family, friends and neighbours and was quick to help anyone who needed her. Nancy had a wonderful sense of humour which quickly endeared her to others. She was involved in many volunteer activities both in the community and in her church. Nancy volunteered for the Cancer Society for several decades, receiving an award for her services near the end of that time. In the early days of Osnabruck District High School in Ingleside, she helped George out many times by driving student athletes to tournaments. Nancy loved music and encouraged the love of it in her children. She enjoyed playing bridge and was involved in several marathon bridge clubs, playing with her good friend and partner for many years, Shirley Wells. She loved to bake thereby ensuring that her husband and children had a life-long sweet tooth. She loved children and they seemed to sense it, many calling her Nanny long before she became a grandma. She was absolutely thrilled when her grandchildren, then great grandchildren were born. Most of all, Nancy had a very strong faith which, even when her dementia became more pronounced, never left her. There is no doubt that Nancy, Mom, Nanny, Great-Nanny, will be welcomed with open arms by her Lord and by many who have gone before her.
Visitation will be held at the BROWNLEE FUNERAL HOME MACDOUGALL CHAPEL 14815 County Road 2 Ingleside on Wednesday, May 2nd from 2-4 and 7-9pm. A service in celebration of Nancy's life will be held at CHRIST CHURCH ANGLICAN in Long Sault on Thursday, May 3rd at 11:00am, Reverend Patrick Stephens officiating, Venerable Bill Clarke assisting. Internment to follow at St. Lawrence Valley Cemetery. A reception will follow at Christ Church Parish Hall.
